Technology and the Marketing Industry

Ask a Professional

examples of technology

Last semester (Fall 2006), for my University 200 class, one assignment was to conduct an informational interview with a professional working in a career field that interests me. On November 29, 2005, I interviewed Kenneth Frager, the Marketing and Communications Associate Director for Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. The purpose of that interview was not to learn about technology and the industry, just to learn about the industry in general. However, we did discuss some of the advancements in technology that have occurred over the past few years and how they pertain to the marketing field. His office is not in the hospital itself and he told me that because of wireless Internet technology, he is now able to go to the hospital to work and be able to access his email and get online to work in the hospital. He told me that his hours are a lot more flexible now because of new technologies. He can work from home on some days and spend time with his daughter because he has high speed Internet in his home and can be in constant contact with the office through his cell phone or the Internet. The downside of this, he said, is that he is a lot more reachable than he was years ago, if someone in the office wants him, all they have to do is call his cell. Even when he has time off, he is on call. During our interview, he received a phone call from a doctor about a question he had earlier. He said that that was a good example of how he can get responses to his questions faster nowadays than he had been able to in years past. He also told me about the newest technology that his marketing team was using for the hospital, podcasting, for iPods. He did not know how to use it so he could not demonstrate it for me, but he said it was on their website. To hear an audio clip from this portion of the interview, click here (interview).
